The Junior League of Miami's "Project Finding Committee" felt that Dade County's children needed a science museum. The Junior Museum of Miami is a private, non- profit organization, which was created in 1950. The Junior Museum later developed into the Museum of Science and Natural History catering to all age groups.

The museum's highlight is its Miami Planetarium which opened its doors to the public in 1966. Children of all ages are exposed to celestial wonders of our galaxy. It consists of a 65- foot diameter domed projection screen with a seating capacity of 231.
