Getting to know the Miami Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins, hailing from Miami, Florida is an American Football Team and are members of the National Football League. Their headquarters is at the Miami Dolphins Training Facility. The team was founded by lawyer Joseph Robbie in 1965 and began playing with the American Football League in 1966. They have joined the National Football League only in 1070.

During the expansion on the American Football League, several names were suggested for the then to be named Miami Dolphins. Such names suggested were Marauders, Mariners, Missiles, Sharks and other thousand different names. However, the runaway name winner was the “dolphins” which garnered 622 entrants in a contest. It was a wise move to adapt the name dolphins for the are know to be the smartest creature of the sea. The intelligent sea creatures has inspired many with their somewhat like built-in grin and known to be the “only creature to love man for their own sake”. Miami Dolphins’ team official name was announced on October 8, 1965.

Historical Highlights of the Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins nicknamed “the Fins” were a success in the year 1970s. They were the first ever team to advance in the Super Bowl. The were the American Football champion in 1971 consisting of Bob Griese, Larry Csonka , Jim Kiick and Paul Warfield, who were the quarterback, running backs and wide receiver. They have defeated the Kansas City Chiefs during their Divisional Playoff Game which was said to be the longest contest in National Football League history. However, they lost to the Dallas Cowboys in the Super Bowl VI.

It was in year 1972 when the Dolphins had their first perfect season with the NFL. They have won every season and the Super Bowl VII. At present, Dolphins beat the Baltimore Ravens.
