Wild animals rove in their entire natural splendor at the Metro Zoo, which is located in the southwest of Miami Beach. Instead of being imprisoned in cages, animals are kept on islands closely resembling their natural habitat. Visitors get the feel of being on an international safari as they can see some of the most glorious and endangered animal species from close quarters. Cleverly designed moats keep the animals at a safe distance. Miami's Metro Zoo is a 290- acre beautifully maintained animal park with habitats featuring Australian, Asian and African wildlife. The collection of animals includes majestic lions, rare white Bengal tigers, quaint koala bears, kangaroos, a Komodo dragon and an impressive aviary. The history of the zoo can be traced back to 1948, when three monkeys, one goat and two black bears were purchased for 0 from a small road show stranded near Miami. The animal collection grew to around 1,200 animals. The zoo received worldwide recognition for the first successful captive birth and rearing of an aardvark in 1967. One can enjoy the sylvan beauty of the park in a 45 minute tram tour. Besides catering to animal lovers, the zoo also plays host to birthday parties, business and wedding receptions, cocktail parties or holiday parties, school or family reunions.
Hours: Daily (including holidays) 9:30am - 5:30pm.
